Re: Backdoor to Skype?? Perhaps not 30 July 2008 15:30
Although it is possible that Skype may have either a backdoor or
exposure affecting the confidentiality of chat and voice
communications; the fact is Skype voice conversations can be
'intercepted' (Although not in the conventional Lawful Interception
sense) via the use of 'tactical' tools used to infect or compromise
either one of the 2 machines involved in a skype communications
session. By targeting a skype users machines using certain bespoke
and even commercial tools; the attacker can record key strokes types,
screen scrapes and record both parties verbal communications; so if
the Austrian gov allegedly says they can intercept Skype; it may not
actually be due to a backdoor within Skype, but simply an exposure of
the 'targets' machine and clever use of 'remote monitoring' and
backdoor technology.
NB: Commercial remote monitoring technology as is rule is NOT
classified as Malware. Several government agencies worldwide have
made no secret of their efforts in developing 'tactical malware' to
assist in investigating crimes by people that either intentionally or
accidentally are using technologies that present interception
challenges to law enforcement.
Encryption technology does not equal privacy.
