In a blog entry at the Internet Storm Center (ISC), Swa Frantzen describes how the command line can be used to get all kinds of information from whois servers about IP addresses and network areas. Juxtaposing the whois information from the various IP administrators - Ripe for Europe, Arin for North America, Lacnic for South America, Apnic for Asia and the Pacific Rim, and Afrinic for Africa - is especially interesting. In addition, he also shows how the additional information provided by the independent Cymru Group can be used in whois queries. Among other things, data are gathered from the routing between the autonomous systems the Internet is made of.
