Windows Home Server is (still) losing data

Microsoft has updated a list of applications, originally released at the end of December concerning a flaw in Windows Home Server which may cause data loss. An entry in the Knowledge Base describes the relevant circumstances: If certain programs edit files directly in shared folders on the server, the files may become corrupted.

Among the affected applications are Microsoft programs like Windows Media Player 11, Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Microsoft Office OneNote 2007/2003 and Outlook 2007 as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements and Lightroom, Apple iTunes, Intuit Quicken and Quickbooks, ACDSee and WinAmp.

Microsoft advises users not to edit files directly from shared folders until the flaw has been fixed. Since the problem only occurs when two or more hard disks are attached to the server it can be assumed that it is connected to a bug in the Drive Extender, or more precisely in the mechanism for redundantly saving files.
