Further rumours of 3G iPhone
The US news service Endgadget has published further rumours on a second generation version of Apple's iPhone, citing "reliable sources". The source claims to have held a prototype in his or her hands. The new iPhone is apparently a little thicker than its predecessor and has a glossy, black plastic back.
According to the source, the new version will be 3G-capable, and include a GPS receiver. The new iPhone is said to have a rounder overall shape, with chromed volume control buttons and to have a flush headphone jack rather than a recessed jack, as in the current model. Not all mini-audio connectors fit into the current jack, so a converter is sometimes required. The new jack may solve this problem. The touch screen will reputedly be the same size and resolution and the battery will still be internal, rather than removable. July 2008 is cited as the likely launch date.
Apple's WWDC global developer conference, which is taking place in San Francisco from 9th to 13th June, will be heavily iPhone related, as is clear from the recently published session plan. Some analysts are suggesting that the new device might be presented in Steve Jobs' opening talk at WWDC. Reports of supply bottlenecks in the UK for the 8 GB model may be due to the phasing out of the current product.
