Deutsche Telekom takes over Shell data centres

Deutsche Telekom has been awarded a contract by Shell oil worth a billion euros. The company will assume responsibility for Shell's data centres worldwide, according to an announcement by its T-Systems corporate services unit. The contract runs for a five-year term and has a value of €1 billion.

According to its own information, T-Systems will take over Shell's global computing and data centres, as well as the IT specialists employed in them. Within the framework of the contract there are three centres in the Netherlands, one in the USA and one in Malaysia. In total, some 900 IT experts will be switching from Shell to T-Systems. Furthermore, most of Shell's SAP services will be transferred to T-Systems' Dynamic Services Platform. The Shell contract is the IT industry's largest this year. It will give T-Systems' international business a healthy boost, pushing it up over the 20% level.

By outsourcing its IT and telecommunication units, the British-Dutch company is looking to cut costs on a massive scale. The total project consists of three areas. T-Systems will be responsible for the data and computing centres, EDS will handle user services and AT&T network operations. Telecom was able to win out against competitors Hewlett-Packard and IBM, who also submitted bids to operate the data centres.
