Graphics card with dynamic power supply

Green IT has gained importance with graphics card vendors at CeBIT. At stall C07 in hall 21, Gigabyte is showing a card with Nvidia's GeForce 8800 GT which contains an additional "Voltage Gear Overdrive" chip designed to reduce power consumption considerably in 2D mode. The component automatically switches off individual voltage converter phases when consumption is low, to get better efficiency in a similar way to current mainboards.

In addition, the added Gamer HUD software for Windows reduces the GPU's clock speed in 2D mode. Overclockers can use the Gigabyte program to increase the graphics chip's supply voltage as well as individually adjust the GPU's clock speed, shader units and memory. The GeForce 8800 GT Turbo Force is already available from retailers at about €200.

Current graphics cards with AMD's Radeon series HD-3000 chips already contain the PowerPlay power saving technology, which deactivates GPU circuits that are not required.
