Acer overtakes Dell on the worldwide notebook market
In the last quarter of last year, Acer for the first time sold more notebooks worldwide than Dell, if the sales of Packard Bell and Gateway are included, since both these firms now belong to Acer. This boosts Acer into second place, while HP remains the market leader, by a large margin. The DisplaySearch market research institute has reported that altogether, 5.5 million notebooks were sold worldwide in the fourth quarter, 41 per cent more than in the same quarter of the previous year. The institute expects the world market to grow to 135 million items this year.
Among the top nine only HP, Acer and Asus managed to perform better than the market average, with Lenovo and Apple almost doing so. By contrast, Toshiba and Fujitsu Siemens lost market share. DisplaySearch, however, has not announced details of the group of 'other manufacturers' serving the remainder of the market not taken by the top nine. Together this collection of smaller manufacturers holds a 16.8 per cent market share and has grown by a disproportionate 64 per cent.
A good half of the notebooks sold had a 15.4-inch (diagonal) display and 1280 × 800 pixels, while almost a quarter had a 14-inch screen with the same resolution.
