Skulltrail - eight cores for those who can afford it

Intel has released pricing details for its flagship Skulltrail gaming system. A Skulltrail PC contains two Xeon processors, aka Core 2 Extreme QX9775, at $1500 each. The Intel D5400XS motherboard with the 5400 workstation chipset will cost $650. On top of that come expensive fully buffered DIMMs and - according to Intel recommendations - a 1200W or 1400W power supply.

As well as Intel, Asus also plans to offer a Skulltrail motherboard. The Asus Z7S WS should also offer two LGA71 slots, but rely on a different PCIe configuration. It has two PEG slots (x16) which support PCIe 2.0 and one eight lane slot. Because Asus does not use the Nvidia bridge chip, it will not support SLI. Users wanting to use multiple graphics cards will need to purchase AMD/ATI cards.
