Nexenta Core 1.0: Solaris meets Linux

The Nexenta Project has reached its first major milestone with the release of Nexenta Core Platform 1.0. The hybrid distribution combines an OpenSolaris kernel with Ubuntu Linux, integrating Solaris features like the ZFS file system. The ISO image is available for download on the project website.

The system is based on Solaris Kernel Build 82 and Ubuntu 6.06, codename "Dapper Drake". The developers have already integrated numerous Build 83 patches. Nexenta Core 1.0 is rather frugal in terms of system requirements – it requires a 32 or 64-bit system with x86/x64 architecture, a minimum of 256MB RAM and a CD-ROM drive. The system can also be run under the Xen virtualisation solution as DomU or Dom0 (32-bit). Nexenta Core is primarily intended to be a stable basis for servers and special applications. Users who want to install it as a desktop system can upgrade it with the Xorg graphic base system and the Gnome desktop environment using the apt packet manager.
