Novell completes GroupWise 8
Novell, the network specialist, has today issued the eighth release of its GroupWise workgroup and messaging software. As was already apparent from the beta version issued two months ago, Novell intends to promote teamwork with Web 2.0 features: this is assisted by the revised dashboard, which presents a variety of data sources and functions like scheduling, RSS feeds, emails and chats in personalized form.
In order to stand out against Exchange, its competitor from Microsoft, Novell is deliberately setting out to provide broad support for operating systems for GroupWise clients. These, according to the updated product documentation, will run under all Windows versions from XP up, Linux distributions with the KDE or GNOME desktop, and Mac OS X for Intel and PowerPC. Novell has revised the WebAccess client for browser access to the GroupWise Mailbox. This requires the latest version of Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer 6 or later. Mobile devices will have to support at least the WML 1.1 standard or be WAP-capable, and have a mobile version of a web browser compatible with HTML 4.0.
The server requires a 32-bit processor or a 64-bit/x86 CPU in 32-bit mode, as did the beta version. Eligible operating systems are, besides the in-house Open Enterprise Server 2, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, NetWare 6.5, and Windows Server 2003 or a later version.
